    Hi David,

Question for you- no hurry given that you’re traveling.

First a little bit of context: I’m using MLA to automate the import of images into WP that have embedded IPTC keywords. These images have been exported from Adobe Lightroom. In Lightroom I use a controlled vocabulary that can attach synonyms and inheritance to keyword terms, which are in turn exported with the images. Up until this point I’ve been mapping the IPTC keywords to the ‘attachment_tag’ taxonomy that MLA creates, but now I’m wondering if I can replicate the hierarchy of my controlled vocabulary by importing the IPTC keywords into the ‘attachment_category’ taxonomy instead.

So my question is: what would be the most feasible way to take my controlled vocabulary and automate the creation of the hierarchical category structure in the ‘attachment_category’ taxonomy inside WP? My controlled vocabulary is a plain text document that uses a combination of tabs (to denote hierarchy), curly braces (to denote synonyms) and square brackets (to denote excluded terms). My hope is to write a script of some sort that can process the controlled vocabulary and insert its hierarchy into WP.

I realize this has little to do with MLA specifically, but your plugin has enabled some very, very interesting possibilities with a minimum of manual labor…

  • I should add: the controlled vocabulary I mentioned is not insignificant– currently it represents about 9,000 individual terms– so replicatiing the hierarchy manually in WP isn’t an option. 😉

Thanks for using the plugin and for this very interesting question.

The attachment_category taxonomy is a standard WordPress custom taxonomy. Any plugin that works with custom taxonomies would work with it. I haven’t done any research, but perhaps there’s some other plugin that would help you load your structure.

I don’t know if/how WordPress taxonomies would handle synonyms, and I’m not sure what you mean by excluded terms. When you say “write a script of some sort” do you mean an PHP script or something else?

If you can send me a few images with IPTC keywords in them and some or all of your plain text document with the vocabulary I can have a look and see what I can come up with. The best way to proceed would be to send me your e-mail address and I will send you an address you can use to e-mail me your samples. Go to the “Contact Us” page at our web site:

Thanks again for your interest and for this question. Let me know if you make any progress and if you can send me some samples.

Thank you for sending your contact information and for following up with more information on this topic. In general, I agree with your final assessment that the “hierarchy of a complex controlled vocabulary” is beyond the capability of WordPress taxonomies.

I’m going to mark this issue “resolved” for now. If you have any more ideas or thoughts about the subject I’d welcome a continued dialog.

Thanks again for your question/suggestion and for using the plugin.
