    Hi there,

We have an issue where a tall ad set to display in the sidebar only on desktop (using AdInserter’s server-side detection) is still showing up on tablet, if our post pages are accessed on an iPad in portrait mode.

The website theme automatically moves the sidebar and everything in it (including this tall ad) under the main page content, so the theme is correctly able to tell it’s on a tablet device (presumably due to smaller screen width). Unfortunately, the tall ad looks out of place in the layout when moved below the content and we would prefer not to show it at all.

The server-side detection has worked just fine for ads with other devices, unsure why iPad in portrait is having this issue. Any ideas?

In general, AdInserter has been working fantastically well for us, so really pleased overall with it. If we can find a solution for this it will be working perfectly.

    Thank you for your help!

    Hello,

server-side device detection is based on the user agent string – what the browser reports. It is possible that the browser used does not report anything that indicates a mobile device.

For your needs it is a much better approach to use client-side device detection

which is based on the viewport width which can be customized:

    Hi,

Thank you for the help. Unfortunately, when we use client-side detection the ads still fetch their ad codes from our ad platform, though they are hidden so it isn’t actually visible to any visitors.

As a result, it renders our ad platform’s analytics completely unreliable and resulting in an extremely poor clickthrough rate…which we have to share with our advertising partners. So this is unfortunately not an option we can use.

We asked about this before and were advised to use server-side detection to avoid this happening. This solved our analytics issue as now the alternate ads don’t ever load and our analytics stays reliable.

But now we have this other issue. Any ideas?

    Thanks again
