Hello. I’m having an issue with the Yoast breadcrumbs. The Home link in the breadcrumbs keeps resetting every week or so to the website’s IP address. I am able to correct it using Yoast Test Helper to reset the indexibles but then it changes back. I’m trying to see if there is a solution to fix this.

I’ve seen someone have this issue before in this forum but it doesn’t look like a solution was arrived at, at least that was posted. I checked the General settings and the home URL is correct. The site is hosted on Amazon Web Services and the IP address is of the instance.

Please let me know if there is something that can be done to keep the Home breadcrumb as the correct URL so I don’t need to keep using Yoast Test Helper. Thank you.

  • Hey David,

What records specifically include the IP? Does the site URL or home URL records in the options table have the site “installed” under the IP address? If so, please know that Yoast SEO uses those values for our output.

I was looking under the wp-config. It’s about the only record I can find. I can’t find the wp-options that is mentioned and AWS doesn’t seem to have a record list that I can find.

I’m honestly not sure where the data that you need is located, I’m sorry. I’ve been trying to find this information but I can’t find it anywhere on AWS.

Site URL and Home URL should be set to the correct website. I see the IP address in some places under wp-config but I can’t tell if or where Yoast is getting the IP address name. I’m sorry I can’t be clearer but this kind of backend code is not my area of expertise.

Well, your site URL and home URL can be overwritten by the constants defined in your wp-config.php – like seen here: https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/changing-the-site-url/#edit-wp-config-php.

If that is the case, we would recommend updating that to use your actual domain and not have it set on the IP address. However, we’re not familiar with your setup on AWS so please consider involving someone to check if there are other necessary changes to make that work, as we are not familiar with how your server/domain/installation is configured.

Thank you @jeroenrotty. I’m not confident in editing the wp-config file as the previous attempts I’ve tried ended up causing fatal errors and crashes. I’ve reached out to AWS about this. Hopefully they’ll be able to provide more information and can help us understand the conflict.

    Hey David,

Sounds good. Yes, I can imagine that this is tricky and it might need to be tested thoroughly. Do let us know if have any other concerns.

Hello @jeroenrotty. I’ve tried contacting AWS but there has been no word yet. I’ll keep checking to see if I get a response. If I don’t hear back from them, I’ll look at other options. In the meantime, if you have any further ideas of things I can do, please let me know and I’ll try them, thanks.

While I’m waiting for a response, is there any way to disable the Home hyperlink in the breadcrumbs? If we’re not able to stop it from snapping back to the IP address URL, we can at least turn the hyperlink off so nobody goes to it while trying to go to the Home page.

    Hey David,

    Thank you for your reply.

We don’t have any snippets or specific code for that, but you might hook into “wpseo_breadcrumb_links” – I’ve found this by a quick Google search: https://gist.github.com/timstl/5348604 but haven’t tested. We can’t give support on customization or custom code, as we don’t want to suggest incomplete or unworking code specific to your site. Make sure to also check our schema output though, as this might also your site URL with IP: https://developer.yoast.com/features/schema/pieces/breadcrumb/#replace-domain-name-in-the-breadcrumb-schema

Thank you, @jeroenrotty. I found the Github code as well. Is it still compatible with the current version of Yoast?

How would I use the schema output? I checked the link but I’m not quite sure how to integrate it.

    Hey David,

    Sorry for the late reply.

I’m not sure about the gist code, but the developer documentation on our side should be up to date. I’d recommend testing this gist code out on a staging site either way.

Thank you, @jeroenrotty. Regarding the scheme output, how would I use that? I checked the link but I’m not quite sure how to integrate it.

    Hi @davidblackballdesign

You’ll need to use that filter to replace the domain name in the breadcrumb schema. We have some more documentation on how to use the Schema API to modify the default schema output from the plugin.

Please understand we also can’t advise and provide the custom code/filters that would apply on your site, so we recommend reaching out to your developer/programmer for assistance on this as well.

I understand, thanks. I’ll try one of these options.

I still haven’t heard anything back from AWS support. Have you had any luck with identifying what might be causing the home URL to keep changing?

Hello @mikes41720. I’ve hidden the Home link, but there has been no response from AWS support. Have you had any luck with what is causing the URL to keep changing?
