[resolved] Invalid author importing single WordPress to Mulitsite WordPress (43 posts)

  1. Manually copy the media to wp-content/blogs.dir/#/files/?

That's where it gets fun. I copied over the entire folder from the single install version of the site but I can't find any of the media in the sub folder it should reside.

so if it can't be extracted from the export file, that one may have to be addressed manually (still, that's much better than reassigning all the authors).

  3. The media isn't IN the export file. Never was, never has been. When you import, you check the 'bring my images to me, my X-men!' link and it pulls 'em in.

Right, I wasn't as clear as I should have been in my previous post. I exported the actual blog folder via FTP before deleting it from the server. That's what I was referring to.

  5. You downloaded (or backed up) ;) Exporting is something else.

Okay. So there's NOTHING in wp-content/uploads?

not a thing, whihc makes me think there must have been something wrong with the ftp transfer from the server to my HD.

  7. Yeeeaaah, I'm kinda with that... And you deleted it all off your server?

  8. I exported the actual blog folder via FTP before deleting it from the server.

It's my understanding that the import will actually go to the URLs and snag them. so if you nuked them from the live site, there was nothing to grab.

@Andrea, thanks for that although it does pose a real problem if moving a single install set up as a parentURL.com/childURL to a multisite install set up as a parentURL.com/childURL.

I discovered that I couldn't access the multisite dashboard until after I deleted the WP install.

So it looks like I'm stuck this time around but are there any suggestions for future installs (of which I have six more waiting)?

  10. Name them slightly differently than the live site, then afterwards rename the 2nd site. tricky but doable and less haggle /work.

Good idea, I'll give that a shot.

I do hope this issue is one being addressed somewhere in the multisite dev community. Although I understand this isn't the primary reason for multistie development (meaning migrating single installs in a subdirectory over to a multisite admin) I imagine I'm not the only one in this boat so a tool to make this process a little easier would be warmly welcomed! :)

  12. the Importer really is the best way to go unless you want to mess with the db directly.

As a followup, I'm taking Andrea's advice via renaming the new subfolder blog until after content is moved over. As of now, I have everything moved over and it's looking good. I'm waiting for the author to sign off on the design and once he does, I'll start to work on deleting the single install and renaming the multi site install.

Thanks to everyone for your help and interest!
