# Internal Server Error issue

 * Hello.
 * I have been using WooCommerce on this website for many years but all of a sudden
   customers are getting an “Internet Server Error” on the Checkout page when they
   try to pay.
 * I have tried turning off all plugins to find conflicts, but this did not reveal
   the issue. All plugins, WordPress and the theme are up-to-date. The only other
   change was a few months ago the server’s PHP was upgraded. I even tried a slightly
   older version of WooCommerce to see if that helped, but it didn’t.
 * Would anyone be able to advise what the issue is?
 * Any help very much appreciated.

 * When you deactivated the plugins, have you also switched to a default theme such
   as Storefront?
 * Also, have you deactivated all plugins but Woo? Because I found a few reports
   of this error being related with email plugins such as WP Mail SMTP in the past.
 * Can you please share the Fatal error logs (if any) under WooCommerce > Status
   > Logs. Then you can use the selector to search for Fatal Errors.

 * Also please share the **PHP Error Logs on the Server:**
   You can find the PHP 
   error logs in a few possible places on the server:
    - in your server’s root folder, called error.log
    - in public_html or similar folder, called error.log
    - in var/logs or similar, called error.log
    - additionally, if you have [debugging enabled](http://codex.wordpress.org/Debugging_in_WordPress)
      in WordPress and you have it saved to a file, it will be in the wp-content
      folder, and called debug.log`

 * Yes, I tried deactivating every plugin except WooCommerce, and the issue persisted.
   I also tried only using the Storefront theme and only the WooCommerce plugin 
   active, and there was no change. I’ve tried older versions of WooCommerce and
   WordPress as well, although everything including plugins and themes are up to
   their latest version now.

 * P.s. Woocommerce > Status > Logs is just giving this error:
   “There has been a
   critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for 
   instructions.” <- Unfortunately I do not have this email to review what it says.
 * I have enabled logging here but there’s nothing in the /wp-content/uploads/wc-
   logs/ folder which is more modern than an empty test_log created a week ago.

 * This seems to be a configuration error on your hosting, It seems a permissions
   error on PHP. Investigating, I found [this](https://xtemos.com/forums/topic/ftp_nlist-argument-1-ftp-must-be-of-type-ftpconnection/)
   reply, but that seems to cause potential [security threats](https://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/189554/what-security-concerns-should-i-have-when-setting-fs-method-to-direct-in-wp-co).
   Have you reached out to your hosting provider to learn more about this issue?
   Since you’ve exhausted the troubleshooting options and ruled out themes or plugins
   conflict, I’d suggest asking your hosting as the next step.
