Support » Fixing WordPress » "Internal Server Error" due to .htaccess? Delete it automatically?

  • I have several sites as subdomains on my Bluehost server.

I use a lot of plugins, including autoposters.

I keep getting “Internal Server Error” on my sites due to .htaccess. As soon as I go into File Manager and delete, my site is back up.

How can I set up an automatic function that removes (and re-news) my .htaccess on a regular basis? Would you recommend it?

    Thanks for any comments!

  • Make .htaccess writable and let wordpress change the it should be
    (chmod 777)

Is that a recurring problem? I’ve never seen a case where that needed to be done on a regular basis. You can simply go to Settings->Permalinks and click “Save Changes.” That will regenerate (and replace, if one exists) your .htaccess file.

#Dyrer: Sound a bit funky, and I am not sure I am understanding it right due to strange grammar…

#Doug: It happens about once or twice a month. And I miss or forget about the email warning me that the site is down. So I would like it to get fixed by itself.

I did not know that tip on permalinks, but when the site is down, admin panel is not available.

Good point, I totally forgot that you were already unable to get into the admin. Do you use any security plugins? Bullet Proof Security can update .htaccess, though I’ve never had the problem you’re experiencing (and it could be some interaction between multiple security plugins, if you’re using any). Another thought, you could set your .htaccess file to read only, that way it wouldn’t keep overwriting itself.

How can I set up an automatic function that removes (and re-news) my .htaccess on a regular basis?

I have multiple sites at BlueHost, and I keep my htaccess permissions set at 404 so none of my many plugins can write to any of those files unless I know exactly what-and-why and decide to allow it.

If it’s set to permission of 404, then there’s no way your .htaccess file could be overwritten at all unless something is changing the file permissions first.

#lee #doug: Okay thanks, that is the solution I am going to try out. Great response, thanks!
