    Hello,

I have some pages which have an internal server error only when YOAST SEO is active. In my last post I thought it works again. But: The problem is back again, on many websites. But not all the time.

If a user clicks faster on menu buttons or in the backend, an “Internal Error” occurs. It only happens on one hosting service system, but not on every website. And not all the time. All my websites are using different themes (I can’t identify a combination of errors and themes/plugins, the themes are used with errors are: Neve, Susa, TwentyTwenty, OceanWP…)

I always use Autoptimize, in my opinion it could be part of the problem. It seems to happen, when the cache is filled. It never happens after cleaned cache.

    Can this be a conflict?

    Best regards
    JWH

    PHP is 7.4.9.

@jwhberlin If you are receiving a 500 internal server error, that type of error will be logged on the server along with a more specific reason for the error.

You may not have access to the server error log where the details of the 500 error are located, but if you ask for this information from your hosting provider they should be able to provide it upon request.

We would recommend for you to first check with your hosting provider and see whether they are able to review their log files for the server and provide more specific information for the 500 error.

It’s certainly possible that the error is being caused by a plugin conflict, but it’s advisable to check this first as a 500 error can be due to a number of different reasons, such as the memory or another server resource hitting the limit defined for PHP for example.

    Hello Carl B.,

thanks a lot for your answer. Sorry: I don’t inserted the link to my first post which I thought is solved. There I added the error log. After re-installing Yoast it worked, but now the problem is back again – the error log shows the same problem:

    Hi @jwhberlin,

    Thank you for your reply.

Looking at the specific error, we are not sure if this is directly related to our plugin itself, but more a hosting/connection issue. If you were to temporarily disable Autoptimize on the site you experience this, can you please check if the issue pops up after a period of time?

    Hello Jeroen Rotty,

after deactivating Autooptimize (I have a test system) the error occurs again. So Autooptimize not seems to be the source. After deactivating YOAST SEO, it works again.

Do you need more information concerning the specific system?

I deactivated all plugins. The error occurs asap after activating YOAST SEO:

    Hi @jwhberlin,

Thank you for your reply and for more information.

Would you be able to check your PHP error log as well, as this error log is your apache error log? It sounds like something goes wrong on the PHP side of things and Apache fails to communicate with it.

We would like to know a bit more about your hosting/server infrastructure as well. Do you know what PHP version you are running by any chance? Please also have a look at our plugin requirements, especially the hosting requirements mentioned at the bottom on this page: https://yoast.com/help/plugin-requirements/.

    Hi @jwhberlin,

    Thank you for your reply.

That looks pretty good and recent too. Would love to hear if you can find anything in the PHP error log that would get us closer to the cause here.

    Thanks.

In the PHP-Log I cannot find corresponding entries. There are only some missing database-tables (from my tests from this morning, but much earlier) from the plugin Events-Manager: EM_LOCATIONS_TABLE

I don’t think it has something to do with the timeout?

    Hi @jwhberlin,

Not sure, the plugin or script might be in a loop and causing for timeouts as well. However, at this point, we don’t really have a clear idea why this happening. Would you mind reaching out to the specific host provider you mention you get this error on so they might to see other logs or resource information on the hosting account. Thanks!

    Hello Jeroen,

after changing from PHP 7.4.9 to 7.3.21 it works. There seems to be a conflict between YOAST SEO and PHP 7.4.9, I think. Can you check this?

    Best regards

    Hi,

In our plugin requirements, we do recommend PHP 7.3 or above. PHP 5.6.20 is just the minimum requirement. So we’re not sure if there is a conflict with Yoast SEO with PHP 7.4.9. We have some test setups running PHP 7.4 with Yoast SEO and it is running fine — https://yoast.com/help/plugin-requirements/

Hi Michael Tina, Hi at all.

I can reproduce the problem with php 7.4.9 – I can’t use YOAST SEO with PHP 4.9 on any website.

    @jwhberlin

We are not sure if there is an issue with Yoast and the PHP version on your site as the errors provided seem to indicate an issue with the server and how it may be set-up/configured on your Linux machine.

We need your help. We’d like to rule out plugin and theme conflicts. Please confirm the following for us

    1. Make sure you are using the most recent WordPress Core, v5.5. If you are not sure what version you have or how to update, your host provider can help.

    2. Make sure the issue doesn’t persist when Yoast SEO is disabled.

    3. Can you confirm you are using the most recent Yoast SEO, v14.7? If you update, does the issue resolve?

    4. Be using PHP v7.4.9.

    5. If the issue only happens when Yoast is enabled, please Check for conflicts. Install the Healthcheck plugin and enable troubleshooting. Then switch to a standard theme like 2020. Does the issue resolve? NOTE: This will not affect how users see your site.

Does the issue continue to happen if Yoast is the only plugin active on your site and you are using a basic theme like 2019?
