I’m very new to WordPress and have downloaded a theme to make a website which I have been trying to customise.

I was in the editor and cut some code from the functions.php section and when i clicked update I got the Internal Error 500 which I guess is due to broken code? I then clicked back and pasted the code exactly back in that I had cut and tried to update it and I’m still getting this error.

Can someone please help me fix this? I can’t get on my website at all and it’s currently in maintenance mode.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Can you access your site via FTP?

If so, go to your wp-content/themes/ folder and make a backup of your theme. Then overwrite the functions.php with the original one that should do it.

I’d be wary of updating the functions.php using the editor. It’s best to make these changes using FTP, that way you can undo.
