Overall a good plugin, although the trust I had for the team behind Yoast has been dented after “Flying Owl-gate”. I originally left a 1* rating due to the intrusive ad, but the CEO of the company acknowledged it as bad judgement, took full responsibility and put a fix out quickly.

Original message:

Crazy how these folks think they have the right to spam animated ads on every single page of wp-admin. At least display it *only* in the context of the Yoast settings.

Surely this is against guidelines? Imagine if every plugin developer hooked something like this up – the notices area would be chaos!

tbf. The guidelines say “should not” rather than “must not”

Yeah – very vague wording currently. Though, would you push those boundaries in good conscience? Especially if you’re team Yoast, who aren’t exactly new to the WP community.

Indeed. Definitely against the spirit of the guidelines.

Yoast should know better than this and should have held themselves to higher standards.

Very disappointing.

Grrr (part of) Joost de Valk’s reply on this thread a few hours ago comes across as incredibly arrogant (bearing in mind the ad in question is advertising Yoast SEO Premium!):

“I totally understand why people can find banners annoying. That’s why Yoast SEO Premium comes without ads, for all users. It’s 30% off today and the next few days too :)”

It seems Joost de Valk came to his senses and deleted his comment on the GitHub thread (and silenced a few other people it seems).

I’ll be changing my rating of the plugin as Marieke van de Rakt, the CEO, has stepped up and taken full responsibility and got it fixed up quickly.
