Support » Installing WordPress » Instillation Question

  • I am using Dreamhost and I have a WordPress theme that a developer created for me to host my personal website. I also have several other domain names from other clients that are basic HTML sites, that I want to convert to WordPress. Do I need to install WordPress for each domain I am hosting with WordPress, so each website has a different Admin Panel? Any help is appreciated. I am trying to learn WordPress, but I can’t seem to figure this one out. Thanks for the input.

  • Yes you will have to install wordpress for each website

Is there a tutorial on how this is done? I’ve check YouTube but I can’t find anything on how to install WordPress into the Domain.

Are all this websites hosted on same host account?

Yes, they are all on Dreamhost. I hired a developer to create a WordPress Site for me, and I gave him access to my FTP Panel etc. He created the WordPress site, then vanished. Luckily he put my email address as the WordPress Admin, and I was able to access the WordPress Site’s Admin Panel to make changes to that site, but I am learning WordPress and trying to help some clients convert their HTML Pages that I did from scratch, into WordPress sites, but I’m confused as to how to add the WordPress files to each domain. Somehow I am missing this.

Do I need to download WordPress on my Mac? Or is this just files you upload to the FTP panel?

You say you have other html websites are they all on their own domain name or are they installed in a folder

They are all on their own domain, just all hosted with Dreamhost. Each site has it’s own FTP log in and such.

Ok now that is clarified my advice is to work on the one that is installed and get all setup and learn how to set website with wordpress and then start one at time on client sites.

OK thank you for your advice and assistance.

This is the error I am receiving:
We were unable to set up wordpress as requested at:

The problem was directory /home/carltonandrew/ is not empty! Please re-install, specifying an empty (or new) directory.

Please correct this and go to our web panel and re-submit your
    wordpress installation request.

    Thanks, and sorry about that!

You can if you want. Or you could use Multisite. It depends on how skilled you feel you are with WordPress.

The reason you’re having a problem is that site has an index.html file. Our 1-click won’t install unless the folder is totally empty. If you wanted to use it, you’d have to install WordPress in a subfolder.

Ok, I’ve installed it in a subfolder, now, however I want to convert this website into a wordpress site. I do not want to have the site domain require a subfolder for viewers when finding the site. Can the site be moved out of the subfolder eventually?

You can not install wordpress in the same folder you have html site You can create a directory in folder and install wordpress once you have it all setup use wordpress from directory instructions here

When you working wordpress site your live site will still be working.

Ok thank you very much. I created a subfolder and started the instillation. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes. Thanks again everyone.

i want to start today, i want to find out if i can install wordpress or i need to get a domain first?
