I would like to install Word Press on my harddrive and create my site before I upload it to my website. I downloaded Word Press, but when I click on in either in my applications folder or in my downloads folder, I just get code. I don’t get a site.

You need to install a web server on your computer and then install WP on that server. If you are using Windows, go here:

For installing WordPress on XAMPP, go to these:

    Hi FAMOsa,

You can’t just unzip WordPress and run it on your computer. You’ll need to create a local environment in which to create your site.

If you’re on a Mac, you can use MAMP and there are instructions in the codex on how to do that:

If you’re not on a Mac, you can use XAMPP and the set up is essentially the same.

    Hope that helps!

Thank you, both. I think I can follow those directions. My web hosting service offers Fantastico and I downloaded WordPress through Fantastico. I put it in a different directory so my website was 365holidaysayear and my WP website was 365holidaysayear/wp It worked pretty well for a while, but when I started making changes in the dashboard, I lost the 365holidaysayear/wp website. That’s when I decided to create the thing here on my harddrive and then upload it when it was ready. My question is this. Which is preferable–working on it while it’s live or creating it first and then uploading it? I guess what I’m afraid of is not being able to upload it once it’s finished. Once again, thank you for your help.

I create the site in xampp first on my computer. Also, I have all 5 major browsers on my computer so that I can test what I have been designing in xampp before I upload.

Then I upload via FTP the latest version of WP to the site, run the install, and then make sure everything works, set the general settings, permalinks, etc.

Then I upload the theme I have created/altered into the wp-content/themes directory, upload any images I need for the theme (using the media upload in WP), then go to the html editor and change any image links in the css and any in the .php files to match the site url.
