    Good evening,

I just pointed a domain to my hosting account with HostGator and changed that domain to the primary one while removing the old one. I then downloaded WordPress with the intention of replacing the old site with a WordPress one. The issue is that WordPress or its themes aren’t overriding the old HTML site. The login works and everything, its just not allowing WordPress the be used.

    Please advise!

    Thank you very much.

  • WordPress serves its home page from index.php. Your old HTML site would have had a home page of index.html, index.htm or something like that.

HostGator and almost all other web hosts give their .htm or .html home page candidates precedence over index.php.

Solution: rename (or delete) your old site’s home page. That should make the WordPress home page visible.

I just deleted two files; index.html and index.htm. Will this change take time to go in affect? Thank you so much for your detailed answer!

No, it should work immediately, though you may need to flush your browser’s cache. Or at least hit the browser’s Refresh button.

Odd that both index.htm and index.html would exist in the root. Look for default.htm(l) and home.htm(l), too.

Well it looks like it worked. I figured it had something to do with a stray file, thanks a lot! Much appreciated.

For anyone else reading this in the future, these “stray files” are added by the web hosting company as a kind of “Under Construction” sign to be replaced once you actually start using your web site.
