 * Hello all,
 * I am completely new to wordpress so please bear with me.
 * Do i have to buy a certain package to use custom themes that I purchased from
   another site? Or can I upload other themes to my wordpress on the free version?
 * Also, could anyone tell me how to make it so a domain name I bought can be used
   as the wordpress url, instead of “example.wordpress.com”?
 * Lastly, do I have to install wordpress to my computer to make these changes?
   or can I make them via logging into the website.
 * Sorry if this post contains questions for multiple topics.
 * Kind regards,
 * Chris

 * I believe you will have to move your site from wordpress.com and have a self-
   hosted wordpress.org site to do that.

 * I recently paid to register a domain name at wordpress.com, and I think I then
   only had to remove the wordpress.com part from its address…and then I could actually
   access the site either way (with either address), as I recall.
    note: Then I
   also soon made it a wordpress.org site.

 * After moving your site to self-hosting (such as at BlueHost or any other server
   that works well with WordPress), you can use any WordPress Theme or Child Theme
   of your own choosing…and there are various ways to modify Child Themes. Some
   folks know how to do that right there at their own computers and with the WordPress
   core running, I believe, but I do that at the site via FTP.

 * [@chris](https://wordpress.org/support/users/chris/) – this may be helpful in
   the differences between .COM and .ORG – it’s a bit confusing 🙂 !

 * You don’t need to install anything on your local computer to use WordPress (which
   is on a server) via a browser – but you can install WP on your local computer—
   see this:
    [http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Installing_WordPress_on_your_own_Computer](http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Installing_WordPress_on_your_own_Computer)
 * But local installs are not accessible on the internet – only on that computer–
   so they are usually just used for development purposes.

 * Thank you very much for the quick replies!
 * [@wpyogi](https://wordpress.org/support/users/wpyogi/) – Do i need to host my
   wordpress.org download? Because when I attempt to install it using install.php,
   nothing happens.

 * you will need a host to host your site when you want to use the WordPress.org
   software – unless you want to work only locally on your computer.

 * Thank you alchymyth, I’ll have a long look through that.
 * I have a domain name already registered to a host, and my package only allows
   one domain to be hosted.
 * Is it possible to host my wordpress site on that package, and have the wordpress
   site as my current domain name?
 * Thanks in advance.

 * I first had a self-hosted wordpress.org site at BlueHost, then I got a wordpress.
   com site before I had realized I can have as many sites as I wish at BlueHost
   without having to pay more. After learning about that, I moved my wordpress.com
   site (my second site) over to BlueHost.
 * The fee you paid to a domain registrar does not tie you to any server, but you
   do have to wait 60 days before moving the domain name to a different registrar(
   such as I will eventually do at BlueHost) even thought you can re-point you domain
   to a self-hosted server right now (without waiting) so you can begin doing anything
   you wish with themes and such at your own self-hosted site (that will then no
   longer be a wordpress.com site even thought the domain registration must remain
   there for a while).
 * Edit: I just realized you might have purchased some type of premium service at
   wordpress.com…and I know nothing about what you can or cannot do with that.
