  • I’ve been building/running self-hosted WordPress sites for years, and never been able to find a slideshow plugin I really like. I’ve tried a ton of them, and none provides the seemingly basic behavior I want.

Then today I see a WordPress site with EXACTLY what I’ve always wanted: just show the pictures, in context of the content, with ability to click forward and backward. Turns out it’s a default/integrated feature of WordPress.com, requires no plugin and uses the perfect/natural shortcode, and there’s no way to replicate it in a self-hosted site.

Is this on the roadmap for self-hosted WordPress,
either core code or as part of Jetpack?

It’s not exactly like WordPress.com’s slideshow, but this might be what you’re looking for:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/slideshow/

It works the same way as the .com slideshow. It’s just styled differently.

From the screenshot in the listing in the plugin directory it looks like that still does more than I want in adding text and stuff, but maybe you can turn that stuff off or it’s blank if you don’t enter any text — I don’t know because I got a fatal error when I tried to install it.

Seems that it’s conflicting with something called “/shortcodes/slide.php” in Jetpack!!!

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare slideshow_shortcode() (previously declared in /home2/hollybar/public_html/willowglencharm/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/modules/shortcodes/slide.php:61) in /home2/hollybar/public_html/willowglencharm/wp-content/plugins/slideshow/slideshow.php on line 173

    I wonder if that’s a hint of WordPress.com-style
[slideshow] functionality being added to Jetpack soon!!!
