Installation w/ existing non-wordpress site

I’m planning a wordpress installation for a client who has an existing site up and running that is not managed via wordpress. I would like to install wordpress on the same server while maintain the current site. I assume after I’m done drafting the site and have finished the wordpress site I can just trash the other content and assign the new pages via wordpress as the home page. Any insight or direction is greatly appreciated.
