Installation of WP will not start

This is day 3 of struggling to install wordpress. My steps:

1) Database created

2) WP downloaded and extracted on my pc

3) contents of the ‘wordpress’ folder uploaded to the root folder via FTP. The root folder contained ‘session’, ‘temp’ and ‘www’ folders. I tried uploading it into ‘www’ folder first. It did not work. Then I deleted it and installed into root (next to ‘www’ folder).
4) When putting http://www.mywebsitename.com into the browser, a page comes up that the domain is registered.

5} When putting http://www.mywebsitename.com/wp-admin or http://www.mywebsitename.com/wp-admin/install.php it says ‘the requested URL was not found on this server’

I also tried changing the wp_config_sample.php to wp_config.php and filling in the database details manually. None of which helped.

Please help.
