Support » Installing WordPress » Installation Internal 500 Error – Help!

  • Hello.
Okay, so I’m going to make this as short as possible.
I am trying to install WordPress on my website (lovelyartz.com) which is using free hosting through Oatbox.net. I had everything installed on my website in its own directory. I even ran the /wp-admin/install.php file and activated my blog. However, my graphic design friend in Florida told me that if I am going to be using WordPress to run my entire website, it needed to be in my root directory, and not a separate directory. So, I deleted WordPress from my directory, and re-installed the files in the root directory.

I used the same wp-config.php file because I still had the existing database used previously. I got the Internal 500 Error, so decided to delete the old database, and create a new one. (I don’t think I am able to change permissions or users because of my free hosting, HOWEVER, it was working fine prior to moving my files around.)

So that is where I am at. I have tried deleting databases, and creating new ones and editing the database information in the wp-config.php file.

    Can anyone help me here?
    It would be much appreciated.

I am bumping this thread. Someone please help 🙁

Internal 500 error problem may be due to file .htacces

It’s actually fine to be running WordPress in a separate directory. Many people do. But that’s probably not what you wanna be hearing right now!

Looking at your website, it’s not a 500 error, it’s a permissions error.

Have you tried deleting everything to do with the wordpress installation from your server and running completely fresh install. Fresh wp-config file and fresh database install. Otherwise, your database and php files are looking for information in the wrong place.

Alternatively, you could move everything back to your original directory, and seeing if you can get it work on there.

Without knowing specifics, that’s the best I can do for now…

I just received some replies from a guy named Dave..but the posts aren’t here so I cannot reply.

Dave – I have tried an entirely fresh install with fresh databases and a fresh wp-config.php file.

I want to run my entire site from WordPress.
    Not – lovelartz.com/wordpress/home.php

If you place WordPress in its own directory, then the links have to be correct in order to even access the files. If the files are in my root, then it will just be lovelyartz.com/home.php – no unnecessary links and words.

No – that isn’t correct. Did you read the link I sent you? It doesn’t matter where your wordpress files are installed – you can make a very small edit so that your site looks like it’s running in the root directory. I used this method for years for my company’s website before we had a separate test server, and I have since worked on lots of sites that use this method.

It means that you can run many installations on wordpress on the same server, all with their own directories – the end use (ie me and you) are non the wiser.

This is the joys of working with php 🙂
