installation - "file not found" (5 posts)

I've just downloaded WP 3.6 for the first time, but can't work out how to install. I've opened the WP folder and then the 'Readme' file. From here, I clicked the link "wp-admin/install.php", but just got the error page "file not found".

Following the Readme file, it suggests that, if the above doesn't work, "Open up wp-config-sample.php with a text editor". But I don't know how to do that.

I am using Firefox on a PC with Windows 7, and would appreciate some help.

To elaborate, WP is NOT an executable program, such as MS Word, etc.; you do not "run" WP :) It is a web framework which requires a web server and MySQL database server to operate.

If you are trying to use it on your own computer, then you need to install a local web and database server.

If you are wanting to install it on the web, then you have to purchase a hosting account (Linux preferred - you do not need to know anything about Linux - and a domain name.

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately WP is sounding a bit more technologically complicated than I was expecting. A friend had told me it was simply a matter of downloading and installing the program, and then it would be ready for developing content.
