    WP Statistics is reasonably large, you could be hitting the PHP timeout limit.

    I’d suggest downloading the file to your local PC, unzipping it and then uploading it to your WordPress install manually and see if that works.

    That helped some I can now at least see wp-statistics in my plugins dashboard. But when I try to activate it, I get “500 internal service error”. I tried clearing cookies and that did not help.

    Any further suggestions?

    You’ll need to look at your server side logs, my guess is your script execution time limit is set very low which isn’t giving WordPress enough time to install/activate WP Statistics.
