inserting social media icons when theme doesn't allow widgets

hello!
i’m currently using imbalance 2 theme, for my blog http://www.thefactoryofthoughts.com

this theme doesn’t allow widgets and i want to include social media icons rather than text links on the right header menu.
currently, i just added text links to facebook and flickr as a workaround, but it’s not a professional looking solution.
i thought that combining the links with icon images at my gallery would fix the problem. so i came across an external forum giving instructions to add a line in stylecss, after finding out the ID for the link you want to modify. here is the coding i used (of course, updating menu item numbers + link to image):

unfortunately this didn’t work.
i would really appreciate if you would suggest me an alternate solution.
