[resolved] Input format of file extensions to track as downloads? (13 posts)

    Hi camu,

is there a specific way in which you're supposed to enter the file extensions in the "Extensions to Track" field? I couldn't find any documentation for this. At the moment, for testing this feature, I entered:

    pdf,mp3,zip

However, Slimstat now seems to (randomly?) evaluate clicked outward links as downloads even if they're neither PDFs, MP3s, nor ZIP archives.

    Hi there,

We were unable to reproduce the issue on our dev install. We entered pdf,mp3,zip and then tested the following:

    1. internal links to other pages (no pdf,mp3,zip) are tracked as regular clicks and don't show up neither in Outbound links nor in Downloads

    2. internal downloads (pdf) show up in Downloads but not in Outbound Links

    3. external downloads (pdf) show up in Downloads but not in Outbound Links (as stated in the description associated to that setting)

    4. external links (not pdf,mp3,zip) are listed under Outbound Links but not in Downloads.

Are you using any caching plugins or javascript minimizers? What version of WP SlimStat are you using?

    Thanks
    Camu

Maybe a holdover from when I had the list with spaces after the commas at first … I guess I'll have to observe this myself a little more. I'm using Slimstat 3.1 on WordPress 3.5.1, no Javascript minimizers or caching plugins are used. The website in question is http://benung.nfshost.com, an article containing outbound links clicking on which was errorneously logged as a download is http://benung.nfshost.com/archives/1307. Documentation on how to list values in text fields would be really nice, though: are list items supposed to be separated by commas, spaces, comma+space, new line, …?

Yes, good point. This will be clarified in the next release: they need to be comma separated values. Spaces will be removed (in the next release) via PHP, so it will not matter... Right now you may want to avoid spaces, though, good catch.

    Keep us posted.

OK, yes, my installation of Slimstat is definitely doing what I described, so no false positive.

Would it be possible to take a look at the issue?

Hm, hm. I will think about it.

But anyway, as far as I can see, it at least seems that Slimstat categorizes a clicked outbound link as a download as soon as there's something following the domain name. So http://www.example.org/ would be counted as an outbound link, while http://www.example.org/foobar.html would be counted as a download.

We will further investigate on our end and see if there's a bug that hasn't been squished ;)

    Thanks

I mean, it's just my personal, little, insignificant site, but I hope you can still understand I'm kind of wary to share admin login credentials. If it should still be necessary to check on my end, there's at least the possibility to make a secondary admin user. Thanks for your dedicated assistance anyway!

We most definitely understand. We'll see how our tests go, but if worse comes to worse, we can always arrange a screen share session on Skype ;)

    Thank you

I think I found the bug. It was a sneaky one, but I got it. A fix will be included in version 3.2.

    Thank you for your help!

    Camu
