• Since the new inline link editor was introduced, I’ve had nothing but trouble with it. Initially creating a link works fine, but the link editor stays visible even after I deselect the linked text.

I’ve found no way to make it go away other than saving draft so that the post editor is reloaded. Since being forced to save my draft after each link is not an ideal procedure, I wonder if there’s a known issue with the editor.

More details: I’ve found that any attempt to interact with the inline link editor to make it go away results in the link disappearing. And once that happens, there is no way to reapply the link to the same text: the link editor just fails to create the link. Only way around this is again saving draft and trying again.

What does work is applying a link, ignoring the fact that the inline editor stays on screen, and applying other links I want in my post, until the post editor is a warren of inline link editors all but covering my post.

I suspect this is not the intended behavior?

PS: I’ve found an alternative to Save Draft to get rid of the box:

    1. Create the link
    2. Select a different bit of text
    3. Begin creating a link there: the original inline link editor now disappears and a new one appears
    4. Click elsewhere without actually creating the 2nd link: the 2nd inline link editor now disappears as well

However, that still leaves the original issue of the first link editor staying on screen.

Hi, I’m currently trying to debug this, but as far as I read in the various threads, this can be related to plugins altering the functionality of links. However, I have 90 installations locally, testing to be upgraded to 4.5.x, but on all 90 installations, with no plugins, and a default theme – this issue is reproduceable – in every single case. (i’ve tested with all plugins active, no plugins, original theme and a default theme, all automated by selenium and 100% reproduction).

Also, in some threads I saw a lot of people having the same issue, but it doesn’t look that it is solved very often. Some moderators even statet, that this is desired and wo’t be fixed (but I guess those didn’t unterstand the issue, as that can’t really be desired).

Thanks, msebel! I can confirm that on my site, with all plugins disabled and the theme back to default, the problem persists.

I’m still trying to figure this out, as our customers are starting to get annoyed by this. Maybe I’il find out tomorrow, but as far as I can figure, this is a bug that would need to be fixed in WordPress core, I’m just not sure where and how yet.

It is, though, a little strange, that this bug does not happen if a do a new install of wordpress, so it might be connected to some existing options causing the problem.

If I know more, I’il open a bug ticket. If anybody else knows more about this, you’re welcome to give me/us some input.
