Support » Plugin: WooCommerce PayPal Payments » Incredibly unreliable for Subscriptions

  • markusssk

The amount of potential subscribers I’ve lost over many months because the “payment method could not be saved” and their order was automatically cancelled is staggering. All I can do then is to contact them and ask them to use a different payment method which only works a fraction of the time and makes me feel embarrasingly unprofessional.

I deeply regret introducing PayPal for WooCommerce and will most likely go through the pain of contacting all existing subscribers and begging them to switch to a different, working payment option.

Support knows about this but can’t solve it. For over half a year now.

If your Subscriptions run on Stripe and you’re considering introducing PayPal, don’t.

    Hi Markus,

Thank you for your feedback on your experience with using PayPal Payments for subscriptions. We understand the frustration when things don’t go as planned. The issue you encountered is related to the Vaulting feature within PayPal, which may not currently meet all expectations in terms of reliability. Our team is actively working on a solution to this challenge, as we understand the significance it can have on your subscription business.

For now, the plugin has a setting that allows you to choose the behavior for subscription payments if saving the payment method failed. This can enable subscription signups regardless of there being a saved payment method. However, without a saved payment method, the renewal payment would not work. So the plugin, by default, cancels the subscription signup to prevent failures in the future.

An upcoming update will bring support for PayPal Subscriptions, offering a more stable solution for subscription renewals even without Reference Transactions enabled. Although it may have limited functionality compared to Vaulting, this new feature is expected to provide a more reliable experience for subscription payments.

We’re aware of the limitations of the PayPal Vaulting feature in the current form and its impact on your subscription business. PayPal is actively working on a major update to address the payment method saving issues, which we hope to integrate into the plugin soon. However, this update may not be available until the end of Q1 as PayPal continues to work on the software development kit.

    Kind regards,
