• We found a big issue with the plugin and spent quite some time analyzing it today. I recorded a video exactly showing how it works and where the problem is. However, due to the data privacy, I’m not able to post the link to the recording here (unless many users request it).

    Here’s the scenario:

    1. A user is visiting a website http://www.domain.com/?utm_source=test-source&utm_medium=test-medium
    2. Google Analytics is showing the correct location (city, state, country) of the user together with the correct source and medium
    3. The user fills out the form and “Event Tracking for Gravity Forms” sends event data to Google Analytics
    4. In Google Analytics there is no UTM info anymore (it’s showing no data) and most importantly it’s changing the location of the user to completely different state, city (and sometimes even country).

    Why is this an issue?
    1. Google is showing more visits than it should, as once the user converted it started a new session
    2. Location of users that converted (i.e. submitted forms) is incorrect so the collected Google Analytics data is useless
    3. All UTM data is lost so it’s not possible to know which marketing channel actually works — again, the collected data is useless.

    How did we test?
    1. I tested on multiple websites that have Gravity Forms and Event Tracking for Gravity Forms
    2. To be sure, I disabled submission tracking on one of the forms and moved it to Google Tag Manager and it worked 100% correctly. I have done it 3x with different forms on different websites to make sure I’m getting accurate data.

I will be happy to share the video recording with the support to present the problem.

@ronalfy I contacted you via the link you provided and sent the URL to the video recording showing the problem. Looking forward to hearing from you.

It has been determined that Google Analytics strips out the UTM tags when sending data via that medium when sending events using Google Analytics mode. The solution is to use Tag Manager to capture to UTM variables and send events that route.

    Hi Ronald,

Do you have a guide/ tutorial for this “use Tag Manager to capture to UTM variables and send events that route”.

    Thanks

@ronalfy it does not only strip the UTM data, there is much more to it as I showed you on the video.

    1. It starts a new session (so Google Analytics shows 2 visits, where it’s actually just 1)
    2. It changes the location from which a user converted.

    It’s huge.

What’s the ETA of the fix?

@raj192 if @ronalfy will not fix it fast, I may create a tutorial on how to do it.

A tutorial would be helpful @banar my time is very limited right now.

    (@banar)

@ronalfy would it be possible for you to provide the ETA?

I’m not sure what to fix, the GA part, which I cannot, or the GTM. I’ll report the bug with your permission to forward to a more senior developer who also can work with me on this.

    (@banar)

@ronalfy ok, feel free to do so. However, the video is for the internal use of your company only. I would appreciate if you could update everyone once you find out when this will be fixed.

In the meantime, we will start transitioning events submissions to the GTM.

@ronalfy could you please provide an update for everyone?

    (@ronalfy)

It should be fixed in the next major version. ETA 1-2 months. I suggest the tag manager approach you showed in the video.

    (@banar)

Ok, thank you. :-/ We will consider switching all clients to GTM.
