• Hi,

I’ve had this work correctly once and incorrectly twice since the WordPress 3.5 update (and subsequent Facebook plugin update). The latest post that was published today shows the correct featured image all over my site but when it published to my Facebook timeline it shows a random featured image (well, it used the same one last time this happened, so maybe not entirely random). If I type the link directly into a status on Facebook, it pulls that same wrong image.

There aren’t other “real” images on the post, they’re all embedded photos from Pinterest (ie, not in my own uploads folder), so I don’t know if that’s what causing the problem? The only actual uploaded photo is the featured image, which isn’t showing through the Facebook publishing feature. Our post from last week was set up similarly, however, and the featured image displayed correctly that time.

Is there a fix for this?

Facebook pulls the first defined Open Graph protocol image in your post. If you view source on a webpage and search for “og:image” you may find an image exposed to Facebook as your preferred image.

The Facebook URL Debugger will parse your URL and display extracted data used to build a Facebook story.

    Hi,

Sorry for the delayed response – I thought I may have figured out something that I did wrong and was trying to test it which took a while.

Thank you for the link to the debugger, I’d never used that before.

The original post that I wrote about actually fixed itself – the next day after publishing the post, the Facebook links starting showing the correct image, and the debugger was showing everything as it should be. It actually changed at some point.

Both of the previous times that the wrong image was pulled, I had only selected a featured image in WordPress right before publishing. The first time, I couldn’t get the thumbnail to show up correctly on WordPress either, it was uploaded but not displaying on the live site, so that might have been unrelated to Facebook and just an issue in WordPress.

Last week, however, I set up a new PAGE, not just a new POST, and did not set a featured image right away. Within a minute after publishing, I DID select a featured image, but Facebook was – and still is – showing a random image (from the most recent blog post, I believe). The debugger for that page shows that wrong image, which does show up on the page but only in a footer widget showing recent blog posts.
