Immediately after upgrading from 2.2.x to 2.3.1, I noticed that clicking on the “more” link for incoming links on the dashboard brought up the Google blog search page rather than Technorati. Well, that’s all fine and good. Except since then I have had no notification of any incoming links from any site, even though I know that several people have linked to me.

How do I resolve this? The link shown in the Google blog search is

    link:http://gnosiscafe.com/gcblog/

which is correct, but perhaps there is something missing that is preventing it from picking up new links??

  • No google blog search just doesn’t have any backlinks to your site.

Sorry, but I can’t understand what you just wrote. Do you mind rephrasing?

    Let’s try it this way…

Question: perhaps there is something missing that is preventing it from picking up new links??

Answer: No, google blog search just doesn’t have any backlinks to your site.

In other words, you’re not getting any incoming links because Google has not found any links coming back to you. Simple. We don’t control Google. Google controls Google. And the blogs that Google knows about, or has read recently, have not linked to you.

If you want to switch back to Technorati instead, there’s a plugin for that:

Ah yes, a comma cleared that sentence right up. Thanks, I may switch back to Technorati using the plugin. But Google must not know about lots of blogs for them to not pick up any links since September!

I assume there was a reason that wp 2.3 switched to google blog search–possibly owing to dissatisfaction with Technorati ranking etc. I just wonder when google will be up to par with what Technorati routinely picked up.

Well, in my opinion, Google BlogSearch surpasses Technorati. In a major way. Technorati never gives me anything but spam results. Google BlogSearch actually shows me real blogs that link to my site instead of spam sites that are little more than link farms.

Technorati ceased to be useful for anything about 2 years ago. But that’s just my personal opinion, of course.

Anyway, 2.3 switched to Google because every time Technorati went down (shockingly often), it seemed like every WordPress user would invade these forums and ask where their “incoming links” went. Google, at least, does not go down. Also, WordPress.com switched to Google many moons ago, and everybody seemed to like it there (with the usual percentage of naysayers, of course).

Huh, maybe it depends on what subject matter you blog about. My blog is not a tech-oriented one, and I get linked to by a lot of academic bloggers, essayists, etc. Google hasn’t picked up any of them. As soon as I installed the plugin today, Technorati showed me about 30 new incoming links, none of them spam. Oh well.

This topic remains UNresolved. See http://wordpress.org/support/topic/115241#post-585554
My other blog running on 2.0.3 never had and still doesn’t have any problems with technorati/incoming links. Thanks to lack of time I never updated that one – a gift from the Gods coz that one WORKS and 2.3.1 DOES NOT. That’s it.The updates are worse.
