Have your Post Notif plugin working well except for one slight glitch. When a post notification is sent out, the unsubscribe link is included as “@@unsubscribeurl” in text, but it’s not an active link. This happens for subscriptions with my WP-registered email address and also for my “dummy” gmail address.

But when I get the subscription confirmation email, the unsubscribe link IS active for both email addresses. What am I doing wrong? Don’t know if this helps, but the website url is http://www.heimhenge.com/skylights. Thanks!

    Hi heimhenge,

Thanks for trying out Post Notif. The issue you mention is one I haven’t heard before, so I’m particularly curious about what you’re running into.

I went ahead and subscribed to your posts, via the link you included, and received the subscription confirmation email, containing only the confirmation link (as I’d expect). I clicked on that and was directed to the “Post Notification Preferences” page on your site (as expected); this displayed the “subscription confirmed page greeting” (though it looks like you have no categories defined/available to subscribers to choose from?) as well as a valid-looking unsubscribe link. I also received, shortly thereafter, the “email sent after subscription is confirmed” (I know it is sort of a mouthful but it IS descriptive, right?!), which you evidently activated via Settings >> Post Notif; it also included a valid-looking unsubscribe URL.

Obviously, I will not receive a post notification email until you send your next one out but everything in your setup, looks good, to this point. And the “@@unsubscribeurl” looks like it is being resolved correctly in the areas I’ve hit so far.

The only place where I would expect it (@@unsubscribeurl) NOT to resolve is when you send test post notifications (via the “Test Send” button in the Post Notif meta box on the Edit Post page) and that is by design (see the “What’s the Test Send functionality all about?” section of the FAQ for a complete list of the variables that do not resolve in this situation: https://wordpress.org/plugins/post-notif/faq/).

So, I will sit tight and wait to receive your next post notification (it looks like you send one out every Monday morning?) to see the @@unsubscribeurl issue manifest itself in the email I receive. In the meantime, if you’d like to send me a screenshot of your “post notification email body” setting (my email address is my first name at devonostendorf dot com), I’d be happy to look at it and see if I see any issues there.

    Thanks,
    Devon

Greetings Devon, and thanks for your quick response.

Yeah I had also been using the old Post Notification plug-in for years, then just last week discovered a WP upgrade had broken it. No idea how long my subscribers were going w/o post notices, but at least nobody complained. Then I discovered your plug-in and it looked like the perfect replacement, thanks! Very easy UI and does everything I need it to.

Yes, my post notifications go out every Monday, so we’ll just have to wait till then to see what happens. I thought I read somewhere in your documentation that the test emails wouldn’t resolve some of those variables, but couldn’t find it when when I went looking. So that’s why I posted my question.

I sent you a screencap of my settings via personal email, as requested. Pretty sure they should work, and that the issue was just with Test Send.

If you’re curious why I put that subscribe widget on a separate page, the “dark” theme of my site was just visually overwhelmed by the white text box. So I’m using the Display Widget plug-in to control which widgets appear on specific pages. Pretty handy plug-in. I tried to change the background color via CSS but none of the selectors I found with the Firefox inspector tool seemed to work. So this was an acceptable workaround. Would be great if you added that ability in the plug-in settings, as well as font choices for the subscribe widget. Would also be great to have a short-code to insert that box on a page. Otherwise no complaints.

So we’ll see what happens on Monday with those post notifications, and if all goes as expected I’ll “buy you a cup of coffee” via PayPal. Thanks again.

    Hi Dan,

I saw your email and your settings look good. Based on the “email sent after subscription is confirmed” template (which I already saw in action) I think your post notification template will work fine too, when your notifications come out on Monday. I am glad to hear that you actually were using the “Test Send” functionality, as that is the most logical explanation for what you saw with “@@unsubscribeurl” variable not getting resolved. 🙂

I appreciate the compliments as well as your suggestion for improving the plugin by adding CSS configuration to the settings. Honestly, configurable color and font options are things that have been lurking on my “potential enhancements” list for a long while but have been low priority because themes often take care of that sufficiently. The request for a shortcode is something I have seen interest for pick up considerably in the past several months; it is high on my list to consider for inclusion in a future release.

Looking forward to seeing your post on Monday!

    Thanks,
    Devon

OK, it’s Monday. I received the email notification. The “unsubscribe” link appears correctly with a valid active URL (as you suspected it would). I presume the same thing happened for all my subscribers since it was the same email template that was sent to them. Consider my original question RESOLVED! Thanks.
