    <meta name="generator" content="WordPress <?php bloginfo('version'); ?>" /> <!-- leave this for stats -->

    What stats are being collected? From where? In the admin panel?

  • It was – in the early days – a way of searching for WP powered blogs because you could use Google to find those version strings. That’s all.
    There is no data collected or sent.

    Now that part is almost usless, but it helps us here. If you have a problem and we go to your site, one thing we will check is the version – and if we can’t find it we have to ask here and that slows things down.
    You can remove it though 🙂

    I’ve campaigned to change it to:

    <meta name="generator" content="WordPress <?php bloginfo('version'); ?>" /> <!-- leave this to keep the knife-wielding monkeys at bay -->

    but it didn’t go anywhere…

    Would a second “aye” vote help, d’y’think, Kaf? If so, consider mine it.

    Well, that’s two.

    Also, I won’t stop theme designers from, uh, sticking it in their own work. 🙂

    *snicker* Oh…. priceless! I’m slow…. never thought about it…. hmph.
