Hi,
You could customize category page via category description.
Take a look at these plugins :
https://fr.wordpress.org/plugins/allow-html-in-category-descriptions/
https://fr.wordpress.org/plugins/visual-term-description-editor/
If you don’t mind developping, you can look at the template hierarchy to customize your category page with some code

Many people use category pages as important landing pages
What? Who does this? The category page is a generated list. There is no editing experience.

@clemart, thanks for the suggestions. But what I am asking is “feature request”. Why can’t categories have the same editing experience as posts and pages? Ideally I would love to be able to do editing of the categories with the Gutenberg Editor.

They can’t because it’s a generated page! If you want a Page to represent your category, then create one and use the editor to make it whatever you want. But generated pages are not edited.

@joyously, I think you have misunderstood me. What I am saying is different. When you login to WordPress Admin if you click Posts and the choose to Edit a Post you have a lovely interface and can use the Gutenberg Editor to add blocks and make that Post or Page as you want.
If you go to Categories, Edit -> Category you don’t have a lovely editing experience but instead you have to work in a tiny textarea.
So my original message was saying “Why can’t we have a better editing experience for categories too? Why do Pages and Posts get all the attention?

Most people don’t put much into the descriptions, but plugin authors have thought of it.

There was another one, but it looks like it’s closed now.

Might be more, also.
You might want to make sure your theme shows the description only on the first page of the archive, to reduce the duplicate content penalty.
