    All of a sudden, the Configure SMTP plugin stop working. I checked everything, it seemed to be ok, but wasn’t working. Searching the net I found your plugin, which I installed, followed carefully all your instructions to set in manually, as the wizard got stuck in the ports checking. I requestested the permission from Google, and was ok. Then run the sending test more than 15 minutes ago, and it still says sending… The same with the Run a port connection test, still “Checking”.

    I’m quite desperated, as we have got some orders through our woocommerce plugin but haven’t realised because we didn’t get any email. I’ve searched the net and tried several options but can’t find the answer. I can access with no problem gmail through outlook, with smtp port 587 TLS.

    Hi there. I’m sorry the plugin is not working for you.

    Now that is an odd error you’re describing, because the port test is set to timeout after 10 seconds by default. If it is going for 15 minutes, something else is wrong in your environment.

    As for SMTP working in Outlook, well the path from your computer to Gmail is probably very different than the path from your WordPress server to Gmail. It doesn’t really prove anything either way.

    Do you have terminal access to the server? Could you login and run the telnet command from the shell? I would be very interested to see what happens when you type this:

    Jasons-MacBook-Pro:~ jasonhendriks$ telnet 465
    Connected to
    Escape character is '^]'.

    You should see ‘Connected’ if your server can make a connection to Google. Can you try this?

    Thank you for your fast answer. I’m afraid I do not know how to do this… I can access the server by ftp, but do not know how to access the server the way you say and run the telnet command. Do you mean it can be a problem with the server? They haven’t changed anything either in the past weeks!

    Because you said all of a sudden Configure SMTP stopped working. So my first thought was (and still is) an environment problem. Instead of receiving errors, your send mail is just hanging. It’s very suspicious. Like your host is gobbling or redirecting your connection attempt.

    Since you have access to FTP, can you enabled debugging in WordPress? You need to add this code to wp-config.php:

    define('WP_DEBUG', true);
    define('WP_DEBUG_LOG', true);
    define('WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false);

    And then turn on Log Level Debug in the plugin advanced settings.

    Try and send a message and send the output of the log (wordpress/wp-content/debug.log) to me at jason -at- hendriks -dot- ca

    You mentioned that your host has closed all your ports. It would be impractical for them to close the HTTPS port, and I think the solution currently under development in the trunk will work for you. It uses the Gmail API to send mail out on port 443 (HTTPS).

    Thanks Jason for all your help and emails, this thread is definetely resolved! And to everybody that gets to this page having problems with email sending, do not hesitate, the Postman plugin is the best solution you can get, and it has also the best support you can expect.

    And that’s very very important when it comes to get all the emails your clients want to send you and all the woocommerce orders they have placed!
