Impossible to change a column width
-
Hola Tobias,
I am quite desperate. I am trying to change/adapt a column width, but I cannot. I tried all the things here around but it does not change.
I wrote the following code, for instance, on the Custom CSS from the plugin and also from the Customizer (theme):
.tablepress-id-9 .column-2 {
width: 100px;
}I also tried adding the !important sufix, but nothing changed.
Any idea?
Thank you!

Hi,
for me it’s working, the second table on that page is centered and smaller now.
Can you maybe try again after clearing the browser cache?Regards,
TobiasHi Tobias,
Sorry this is taking so long. I do appreciate your help. The extra spacing is now gone (hooray!) but the custom CSS is not having any effect on the table.
In the updated link below the first table – 47 has the custom CSS turned on and the 2nd table is a copy with different ID and no custom CSS. As you can see they are exactly the same. Both still have the extra room off to the right. That is what I’m trying to get rid of. Reduce the overall width of the table down to 425px and then center it.

Hi,
the “Custom CSS” for that would be
.tablepress-id-46, .tablepress-id-47 { width: 425px; margin:0 auto 1em; }
Is that’s what you are using at the moment? It doesn’t appear to be, as the CSS files that I mentioned above contain other code again :-/
Regards,
TobiasHi Tobias,
It did not work. Actually the “Horizontal Scrolling” feature was already off. I have also tried turning on and off all table features and it did not work either, using:
.tablepress-id-9 .column-1 {
width: 100px;
}into the plugins option…
Hi kicooo,
this is working for me. What exactly do you want to adjust in your table now? It looks fine to me…
Regards,
TobiasHi Tobias,
The first column does not show a width of 100px, as it should… In fact, if I use firebug and change the following code, it works:
.tablepress td, .tablepress th {
But as I said, changing the column by the plugin options, nothing changes…
Hi,
when I check with the Google Chrome Developer Tools, column 1 is 116 pixels wide, which is your desired width of 100px plus 8px of padding (inner white space) on each side. This is, because your theme instructs the browser to calculate the width based on the “content-box”. To change this, you could use the CSS
.tablepress th, .tablepress td { box-sizing: border-box; }
With that, the column should be 100 pixels wide, including the padding.
Regards,
TobiasHi,
I am sorry to say I used that code and it didn’t work… I also added the following code, and it didn’w work either:
.tablepress th,
.tablepress td {
box-sizing: border-box;
}
.tablepress-id-9 .column-1 {
width: 100px;
}I cannot see the current width of the first column. However it is narrow enough to show:
JAN
6isntead of:
JAN 6
Regards
Hi,
this is not happening for me. The column is wide enough to show the date in one line of text.
Now, as you are using a plugin that removes the version strings from the URLs, this might be a caching issue. Can you please delete the three files
tablepress-custom.css
,tablepress-custom.min.css
, andtablepress-combined.min.css
from thewp-content
folder on your server? After that, please save the “Custom CSS” again.Regards,
TobiasHi again,
to prevent the line break in that column, we could then actually use
.tablepress-id-9 .column-1 { white-space: nowrap; }
to prevent line breaks. That way, we wouldn’t have to mess with actual widths either.
Regards,
TobiasHello Tobias,
I am sorry to say, I still see the same table after following your instructions and emptying cache.
Using 2 different computers and browsres I saw the same issue… What a nightmare!
Thank you,
JavierHi Tobias,
Unfortunately it still has no effect on anything. To make sure I have done it correctly, here is screenshot of the plugin CSS code
https://www.dropbox.com/s/3w0t4sw1wtf8lzj/TablepressCSS.JPG?dl=0
and the updated published link. I did try clearing cache and different browsers
http://simplelifeinsure.com/example-tablepress-column-width-issue/
I’m now wondering if there is something that is causing the CSS to not work at all? Although I’ve made many tables in TablePress, this is the first time I’ve used the custom CSS. Is there a way to tell for sure? Maybe a CSS you could give me that would be 100% obvious to know if they are working? I don’t care what it does or looks like as this is a test page.
Hi,
@tystewart888 and @kicooo:
The CSS is working. It’s just that the CSS file/wp-content/tablepress-combined.min.css
is not updated on your sites, for some reason 🙁 Can you delete that file again, via FTP?As both of you seem to be using a plugin that is removing the version string information, I assume that that could play a role here. What plugin are you using for this?
Regards,
Tobiasdo you mean this plugin possibly? My developer put that in a while back
https://wordpress.org/plugins/remove-query-strings-from-static-resources/
I tested with removing that plugin and it was the problem. So now it’s working correctly!!
thank you so much for this great support. I had previously rated 5 stars and donate to plugin but will be sending another cup of coffee your way today. This is much greater support than I expected.
