Importing non-Media Library images into the Media Library

  • I’ve been using WordPress since v1.2. As a result, I have thousands of images in many hundreds of posts that were uploaded into a directory I created myself and there’s hard links in the posts.

    Example: http://s4xton.com/30/covered-in-ice/

Since the invention of the Media Library, none of these old images are in the Media Library. This causes a big problem when one looks at exporting/importing to a hosted WordPress.com site, for example.

What I think I want: a plug-in or some code that goes through all my posts, finds any images that are linked from my old photo directories and imports them into the Media Library, and updates the post to use the version in the Media Library.

I haven’t been able to find any plug-in that does this and I’m not sure what other ways I might approach this problem. Any help, even if it’s just pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

    Cheers,
    -Aaron
