Not a support question, but a question about the future of the plugin – thus I am posting it here.

I am thinking about the future of footnotes in WP after it moves to Gutenberg, and it has been suggested to me to pay attention to your plugin. I was mot familiar with it.

I have installed it on a test site. From what I see, it seems to be meant primarily for academic articles with references rather than articles with footnotes. I see that footnotes can be added too, but your primary goal is obviously to support articles with references – which is great.

But what about importing an article written in Word, or any similar text editor? For that purpose, since I switched my sites to WP over the past 18 months, I have been using the wonderful plugin Mammoth Docx Converter: it works great. I wonder, however, how it will evolve with the block logic of Gutenberg.

Could you please enlighten us about what you have in mind regarding the future of your plugin in the Gutenberg environment? And will the import of footnoted texts be part of this future?

Best wishes for the development of the plugin in 2018!

    Hi there,

Great to hear that you’ve been recommended the plugin! Very cool. Hope your friend has found it useful.

You are correct that Footnotes haven’t been the primary focus of the plugin since its inception.

I’ve received a number of requests for them and, with the exception of the little workaround that I made available, I still have not had the time just yet that I’d need to devote to it. I will say though that I think it’s an important feature and one that I am interested in supporting in the near future (Gutenberg preparation has demanded pretty much all of my available attention for the time being).

I wasn’t aware of the Mammoth plugin. That looks pretty neat from first glance. I think it would be totally possible for the plugin author to support Gutenberg if he decides to devote time to it.

At present, there’s no way to import documents with citations/footnotes from Word or other word processing software with this plugin. Theoretically possible in the future, but no idea when I’d be able to get around to that.

Could you please enlighten us about what you have in mind regarding the future of your plugin in the Gutenberg environment?

Gutenberg will definitely be supported. The Gutenberg API is still pretty unstable at this moment, but I’ve been watching closely.

And will the import of footnoted texts be part of this future?

I’d first have to implement first-class footnote support before being able to import text with footnotes. The first-class support has been on my radar and is something I’ve been meaning to dive into when time allows.

After that happens, I might consider whole document importing, but again I can’t give you a reasonable time-frame as to when that might happen.

Thanks for the feedback. Happy New Year!
