Support » Installing WordPress » Importing an existing site to new blog

  • I have already set up one WP site and need to set up another one for our other practice. A lot of the content is the same, just name changes, can I import the other site (I’ve exported it to a local drive) and then just edit what I need to or does that mess with the actual site name settings? Or is it easier to just set up the same theme, widgets, plugins etc and copy and paste the data?

  • Do you want to duplicate content?

Hi, thanks, I pretty much want the site the same but will need to just edit some of the content to be specific with the other practice. I was worried about using the wordpress importer in case it changed anything in the settings. I need all the same plug-ins and widgets.

Duplicate content can land you in trouble with the SEs. So, see that you do not fall into that trap.

    Try these:
    – Make a list of your plugins
    – Save your theme settings
    – Just import your site (including database)
    – Install WordPress and restore your site. Make sure that you edit links to suit your new domain.
