 * Hi,
 * I’m trying to move my free [http://www.wordpress.com](http://www.wordpress.com)
   account to my own server.
    I exported 4 xml files – one for each author (since
   the file is over 4MB). Now, I’m logged in as admin on my wordpress server and
   I’m trying to import the file. The next screen asks me if I want to create a
   new user for the author attached to the file I’m uploading and if I want to download
   the images on the site. I click on next, and on the next screen it thinks a little
   bit and then do nothing. I check the posts – nothing. Check the pages – nothing.
   Categories and Tags were imported, and the media library has one file – the XML
   file I imported!
 * What am I doing wrong here?

 * Maybe try creating the user first, and adding your content that you are importing
   to that user, maybe you will get different results.
 * But I think the files you exported from your WordPress.com blog are bad, it should
   be pretty painless migrating your content, so you could try re-exporting those
   XML files.

 * I tried it with a few different files… None of them worked…
    Wordpress.com support
   suggested that the timeout time on my hosting is too low, but the page doesn’t
   stop after one minute, it takes something like 10 seconds…

 * Yes, a 1MB file doesn’t seem excessive at all.
 * One thing you could try is exporting a very small XML file form your account
   and try importing that, to see if it’s broken altogether, or if it is truly the
   filesize.
 * Maybe create a test author with a single post, and export that, if you can import
   that, then it is a size issue and you might need to gripe to your host. But if
   it is still broken, then the problem must lie with WordPress…

 * I’ll try that.
    Another question. When exporting and importing the website. Will
   the permalinks be saved as well?

 * Well, the slugs on your Pages and Posts will be the same, so if you set up [Pretty Permalinks](http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks)
   with the same structure on your new self-hosted blog, they will be the same.
