Support » Installing WordPress » Import from previous wordpress installation

  • I’m moving from one webhosting company to another and want to know how to move my wordpress installation so I don’t lose all my posts.

I assume that I export my database from the old host, re-install wordpress at the new host, and then import the database. But I need some help. For example, when I export the database each table has three files, ending with .frm, .MYD and .MYI, respectively. Which one do I import?

Am I on the right track?

    Thanks,

    Greg

  • Are you using phpMyAdmin to create these backup files? In my experience it just gives me either a .txt file, or a gzipped text file, ending in .gz.

This link from the documentation may be useful? http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress

Yes, I exported the files from phpMyAdmin, and it did give me a .tar.gz file, which I tried to import into phpMyAdmin on the new site — with no luck. I think I exceeded the size limit.

So I recreated the database on the new server, uncompressed the .tar.gz file, and tried to import individual tables. Still no luck.

What happened? Did it accept some but then stop? There may well be a limit to the size of your database, if so you won’t be able to exceed it…
