For an unknown reason, all our website’s widgets were deleted. We have now tried to import the widgets from an earlier backup of our site and we get this error message:

Import data could not be read. Please try a different file.

Any idea of what we can do?

    Hello,

That error occurs when the contents of the file cannot be decoded.

    1. Try with all other plugins deactivated in case there is a conflict.

    2. Add some widgets then do an export. Try to import that .wie file. Does it work or show the same error?

    3. Upload the file somewhere (Dropbox, etc.) so I can see its contents.

Hi, I have created an export and I tried to make the import on the same website. The export worked, but the import gave the same error.

Here is the export file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/fowrrc5sxc191g2/bcnwidgets.wpengine.com-widgets.wie?dl=0

Any idea what caused this error?

I get the same error with that .wie file. It seems the data exported via your site is corrupt in some manner. That could be due to a plugin that is interfering or a particular widget (or widgets) that do something unusual.

Try deactivating all other plugins then export and import. Does it work without the other plugins? If so, the problem is caused by a plugin. If that’s the case, try re-activating them one by one, testing export/import as you go to identify which plugin causes the issue.

If it’s not a plugin issue or if the plugin with the issue is providing a widget, try moving your widgets to Inactive one by one, testing export/import as you go. It could be a specific widget causing the issue. On rare occasions, a plugin-provided widget may be doing something unorthodox with data.

    Hi Steven,

Thanks for your support, I solved it now!

The conflict was caused by woocommerce!

After deactivating woocommerce I was able to do the import of the widgets. Now I enabled woocommece again and the widgets show correctly.

I’m glad to hear that. That is interesting. I’ll keep an eye out for other reports in case there is something I can do with regard to WooCommerce.
