I have 347 columns in my spreadsheet and when I have all of the info pasted into it it says I have over 1200. I took out the short and long descriptions and it says I have 347, the correct amount. When I add back just the short description or long description it says I have 615… This is in Test import, by the way. Along with the huge numbers I’m also getting a ridiculous amount of errors. Saying missing descriptions when there are descriptions, Invalid users even though I have no users listed… Any idea what could be causing this?

    Hi Inapprope,

Sorry you’re having import issues here. First–just to clarify here–do you have 347 fields in your listings? That’s a LOT. Maybe too many. But it could be a misunderstanding of what should be a column here.

Normally, a listing has 10-30 fields roughly. Each field is a column in the spreadsheet. Like name, address, city, state, business name, etc.

These are the titles of the data for each row. Your rows will be much, much larger than your columns in this case.

Of course, you’ll want to define your listing fields before you try to import things. After that, create a sample CSV file to get the column names exactly as they’re created inside the system.

We cover all this and more in our CSV import documentation here: http://businessdirectoryplugin.com/docs/#admin-import

Sounds like maybe it’s worth going through that in detail to make sure what you’re creating and using is something BD can understand.

If you’ve done all that and it’s still failing, can I see a screenshot of your CSV Import screen (the bottom, with all the fields) and a sample CSV file (with just a few rows) linked here?

I screwed up the words. I meant Rows, not columns. It says it increases the number of rows when I paste in the descriptions for the companies on my spreadsheet. Take out the description and it goes back to the right number.

I made a test company and exported it then used that made spreadsheet to paste all my info in. It’s worked for me on the other sites I’ve done… Until this one.

It’s like as soon as I paste the descriptions in it doesn’t know how to use the column separators anymore. My import warnings are all missing fields and under “Line” in some it shows the separators in some of them, in others it shows nothing.

Ok, Been tinkering with it a bit more and it looks like it’s counting every paragraph of text in my descriptions as a new row… Do you know of what could be causing this or any way to fix it?

    Hi Inapprope,

Sounds like your Excel/Clipboard/source-tool link is a bit weird. Whatever data you’re pulling from, the clipboard interprets that as separate rows in a CSV paste within Excel. I’m not sure how to work around that aside from either changing the source data somehow or manually adjusting the pasted data.

They paste into the correct cells in the spreadsheet. The CSV looks normal and I’ve done it the same exact way before a couple weeks ago and it worked perfectly fine. I don’t think Open Office has updated since then…

Something else you can try is to attempt the import of a 3 row CSV and see if that works after pasting the data–that would show you if the problem is the pasting or the content itself. If you can’t get even a single row to import, that would imply that the content isn’t matching.

Are you getting any errors from BD during the import?

Can you show me a screenshot of them?

I did a 3 row test import of the data. Import summary says “Rows in file: 5, Imported rows: 2, Rejected Rows: 3”

Warnings are below, even though I have descriptions and categories for all 3 rows. Very strange.

From the error message, it sounds like you might have multi-line rows, which isn’t something that you can have in a CSV file. All columns for one row must be on the same line in the file–the line break is used to find the “next row”, so if there are multiple lines where there’s only one row, our CSV import will not be able to understand the row properly.

Can you post a link to the CSV file (a small version of it–just a few rows) and a screenshot of your CSV import screen at the bottom showing the fields required?

Is there a way I can send that directly to you?
