I am new to WP and managing a little webpage hosted with it. In the past I have used TYPO3 for some other webpages.

One thing is boring me a little bit: all images that you are uploading are stored in one big root folder. No possibility to use a directory structure to organize your images in a hierarchical way.

I have found some plugins to give such functionality, but I try to get the installation smart by not installing any plugin which could always be a potential security risk.

Wouldn’t it be nice, if WP core gives the user the ability to create some subfolders in the image directory on your webspace to organise the uploaded pictures by this way?

Media uploads can be organized into year and month sub-folders. Go to Settings > Media and check the “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” option (near the bottom).

If you don’t like that hierarchy, then you will need a plugin to alter it, or custom code a solution.
