Images uploading without error but no picture showing

I am uploading pictures fine. No errors or issues except when previewing the pictures all I see is a blank white frame with an icon in the centre.. this same blank space appears on the finished page.

Weirdly even though in the image library in consistently fails to show thumbnails of the images, sometimes an image does work on the site proper.

Very image based website so it is essential I resolve this.
