Support » Plugin: WP Paint - WordPress Image Editor » images pixelated to heck

  • Hi,
Why is it that all images loaded into wp-paint are pixelatd?? unreadable text at any resolution and ‘box-pixelated’ content. Just installed and the very first image just doesn’t fill me with confidence if this is the overall plugin image quality. No matter how much i adjust the zoom the image is just a boxed-pixelatd mess. Is it difficult to achieve the same image quality as used by the built-in media editor?? If so then apologies but it really needs to be looked at. First impressions ‘count’ and i’m not overly impressed especially as a decent WP image editor has been amiss since WordPress was created.

@trutherone Can you provide your browser with version and some samples of original images vs resized images? We haven’t had similar complaints on this, so having more information would help.

    Yes sure,

    WP Version : 5.5.1
    PHP Version : 7.4.9
    Database Version : 10.3.23-MariaDB-log-cll-lve
    WP Paint Version : 0.4.6

Here is the same image untouched initially opened in WP standard editor then WP-Paint:

    WordPress Media Editor

    wp-paint Edit

    wp-paint Edit (at 100%)

I hope its an issue with my installation since i’ve done many Google searches for replacement Media editor for WP and yours always rates high so this is why i think it may be isolated and ‘installation-specific’ at least it can then be resolved. Other than this it ticks so many boxes.

    Thanks

Could you please send the original image for us to try out at our end?

Also, are you using the latest version of Google Chrome?

    Yes latest chrome :
    Google > Help

Image itself is a standard .png 8bit resized in Photoshop. Pngs, as you know, can tolerate some scaling ‘up’ before any pixelation occurs – i would expect this type of pixelation from a .gif

Are you trying to Scale up or scale down?

I just scaled the image to 1200×1440 pixels using WP Paint without much pixelation.

Here is the link to the scaled image (1200 × 1440)

Here are the steps to do it:

    1. In WP Paint go to Image > Resize
    2. Set Width(%) to 200% and Height(%) to 200%.
    3. Remove the smaller layer.
    4. Save the image.

I haven’t attempted to scale up or down! what you see is the image as opened in WP-Paint without me doing anything. Eventually i’d like to scale DOWN (which is the only way to scale without pixelation) and also id like to Crop, preferably specifying anchor points if possible. However for now i’d just like to see the image without pixelation.

Tried your suggestions – only small amount of improvement but not good enough for working with. Do you have any 3rd party plugin enhancing the image quality on your machine??

The image zooming pixellation is controlled by the browser and not much can be done there. The actual resizing code component is where the resizing algo can be picked and can be controlled.

Not so i’m afraid – this only happens with images opened with your plugin; I rarely touch the browser zoom control and btw its set permanently to 100%. I have the global Media Settings in WP menu all set to 0 (zero) to prevent WP creating unnecessary, unwanted image copies. If your plugin is expecting defined dimensions for an image then it may be defaulting to rendering small size images which of course when scaled up cause this issue.

To reduce the browser memory load (and default PHP upload limits), the max resolution of images rendered by WP Paint was earlier set to 921600px. Starting from version WP Paint 0.4.7 it’s now set to 1166400px again considering the browser memory load and default PHP upload limits. Please upgrade your WP Paint version to 0.4.7 and see if the zooming pixelation issue has mitigated a bit.

Also, it is to be noted that to prevent loss of detail and blurring of images on zooming images, Image Smoothing is disabled upon zoom just like standard Desktop editors.

Here is an example of 200% zoom on WP Paint vs GIMP (A Popular Powerful Desktop Image Editor)

    WP Paint vs GIMP

You can see clearly both pixellated very similarly.

I rarely manipulate images larger than 1900 px wide – the example image we’ve used here is typical of the sizes i use a lot in our project 1000 x 1200px.

Just upgraded to 0.4.7 – There is a slight improvement. Rasterizing the image made a slight improvement also. This, together with your point about ‘Smoothing’ leads me to believe it may be an anti-aliasing issue. I see similar issues in Photoshop When i turn aliasing off; all images and fonts take on this pixelated, jagged-edged rough look.

i dont have these issues i dont hink is this plugin causing the pixelation my pics sytay same quality
