• I am running a multisite.
I have a main site with six subsites.
When I upload images to the main site the become grey thumnails and do not show. However, the files are seen in the uploads folder.

Uploads on the subsite are ok and appear as the should. This problem is only with uploads to the main site.

I have tried directions to folder permissions, htaccess edits and using the plugin “Add from server” and none has resolved the problem.

Help will be very much appreciated.

    Thank you.

  • I’m not really sure I understand the question as I look at your main site and don’t see any missing images so it must be sort of working.

Anyway, WPMUDEV recommended this plugin. It’s a little dated but should still work though I have never run it. My understanding is some resize operations can break the thumbnails. This is what they recommend to fix them.

BTW: you’ll need to leave the browser window open while it runs… just be patient.

    Thanks for your response, @jnashhawkins.

The plugin didn’t solve the problem so I will try and make it clearer.

When I upload an image, it becomes grey in the media library. It doesn’t show when you attach it to a post. However, you can find the image in the uploads folder.

This problem is only with the main domain http:agrihomegh.com.

    I am running a multisite.

When you upload images to the subdomains media library they appear alright.

    Hope it is clearer.

Okay, I may have read something into what you said when you said, ‘However, the files are seen in the uploads folder.”. My bad… Did you look to see if the image itself was actually viewable by copying the file url to the web browser?

if you couldn’t upload the image files completely and linking the image doesn’t work then the file is corrupt and the plugin can’t fix the image.

So, let’s look at the network settings…

MY Sites –> Network Admin –> Settings

scroll down the network settings page to ‘Upload Settings’.

If site upload space is checked then set that higher.

Look for the file extension in upload file types.

Max upload file size must be equal to or bigger than your biggest image.

So if one or more of those settings are off then your upload will probably fail leaving you with a broken or missing image. I can’t think of any other thing that might cause this on just one site of a multisite.

You should probably delete the broken images manually. They should say unattached but, if you tried to use them anyway, they may be attached. If in doubt keep them.
