    hi everyone,

I am uploading new images in wordpress but when i do SOME images are blank after upload. When i click on the blank image tile and select ‘edit image’ it shows in the editor.

when i go back to thumbnail in media library list, it is still blank. if i insert it into a post to see what happens it is still blank. this happens with brand new files, if i upload an image that i have previously uploaded (but to a new media folder to stop overwriting), they work fine. It seems to be only completely new files. I’ve tried renaming image and uploading again but i get the same issue. I have tried regenerating thumbnails but still the isue persists. I have 2 separate websites and it is happening on both of them.

Any help would be appreciated in this.

  • Are both websites hosted by the same hoster? With identical settings there?

Is there any abnormality under Tools > Site Health?

Can you access the original image after uploading (via link when editing)?

Hi Threadi, thanks for your reply.

Both websites are hosted by ionos, No site health abnormality.

When i upload an image, i get the name only (usually you also see a small thumbnail preview) and an option to copy url to clipboard. I select that vuton, open a blank browesr window, paste the copied url and it displays fine in the browser. That would suggest a wordpress issue yes?

That sounds really strange. Do you see an entry in the error log of the hosting?

You say you have also tried the regeneration – with it? https://wordpress.org/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/

Are the images in question visible in the frontend?

You say it concerns only some pictures – take a random one from the internet, e.g. from https://picsum.photos – do they work?

Yes downloading a pic from picsum worked in upload. could the images i have have some sort of protection on them?

if it was a server issue then it would happen to all images of the same type, like a;; jpg’s or all png’s but it clearly works with some but not others.

No, there is no kind of “protection”, but there are image formats that cannot be processed by some servers. E.g. if they were saved with CMYK instead of RGB, or have some other exotic color scheme.

You could try to open the files in question with GIMP and save them again via export. Of course you can also use any other image software you like. The only thing that matters is that you choose a web compatible format when saving.

I have already opened and resaved a copy in photoshop. It makes no difference. I really don’t understand it at all.

All right clicked and saved from Google images. Show everywhere except when uploaded to WordPress.

Update: now this is weird, any image file with the word ‘advert’ in it wont display properly. original name uploads fine, rename it to advert_us.jpg and it doe not show, rename it to dog.jpg, it uploads fine, rename it to advert_on_site.jpg and it doesnt show again.

Something in wordpress that doesnt like the word ‘advert’?

2 identical photos in image below, images named with ‘advert’ dont show.

just to clarify. in the above image advert1 and sponsor1 are the exact same image file but with a different name.

Have a look at the pictures with a completely different browser or even a different system. Can you see them there? Then you have activated an AddBlocker in your normal browser which blocks files with certain words (like advert).

There it is… that’s the answer. I never thought for a second about my adblocker. That’s why they aren’t showing on PC browser. Thanks very much threadi. 👍
