    Hello there,

I have a general question about the PHP extension ImageMagick. With recent WP versions including Health Check function, I was made aware that ImageMagick is not available for WordPress on our WP sites.

I can quickly activate the ImageMagick PHP extension at our hosting console for each site, however our hoster recommends not to activate the PHP extension because it would increase PHP memory consumption drastically, but “rather use the normal ImageMagick tools at /usr/bin”.

Now I am uncertain. Should I ignore this warning and activate ImageMagick for all WP sites? Or only specific sites that would benefit a lot? (But what are the specific benefits of ImageMagick anyway?) Or make WordPress use ImageMagick at /usr/bin?

My understanding is that ImageMagick is more efficient than the gd libraries, so if you can install ImageMagick and the necessary PHP libraries, your media uploads will happen a bit faster. (My understanding comes from a quick review of the results from https://www.google.com/search?q=imagemagick+vs+gd, so take it for what it’s worth. 🙂 )
