Support » Fixing WordPress » Image will upload with browser uploader, but not multi-file uploader until..

  • WP 5.5.3, running on a Ubuntu 20.04 server (so PHP 7.4.3).

I tried several times this evening with the latter. Each time, with three different images, I got an error message: “Post-processing of the image likely failed because the server is busy or does not have enough resources. Uploading a smaller image may help. Suggested maximum size is 2500 pixels.”

All were 1414×2000 pixels. All are about 250KB in size. There are larger images already uploaded a couple of months ago with no problem.

I tried on a different site, on a different server – no problem.

I tried on a different different site, on the same server – no problem.

I tried on the problematic site with the browser uploader.. and it worked!

I then tried again with the multi-file uploader.. and it worked!

In that time, the server hasn’t had any updates. The site hasn’t had any updates between the two, but… it now works and it didn’t work about an hour ago.

    I’m puzzled.

  • The error message pretty much says it all right here…

likely failed because the server is busy

What are the chances that the serverwas under more load at that time, so the processing failed? From what you’ve said it sounds like it’s a shared server, so any other site on that server coudl be eating up enough resources to make that sort of function fail.

It’s not server load – as well as looking at top via ssh at the time, I’ve also got the monitoring graphs. CPU use bouncing along the bottom, sometimes peaking at 5-10%, load peaking at 0.4, memory use <50%, disk I/O fine, space fine.

There are about 30 other sites, but most are static and quiet.

What’s it actually do? Where would I look in the server’s log files to see what’s happening?
