It seems a WooCommerce limitation that the variant images only switch when all variant options are chosen.

I have variants for size (large, medium, small) and variants for color (up to 4). The image only switches when all variant options are chosen.

We But we only photographed the different sizes of the product (flower shop) and did not photograph all color variants in all sizes. That would have been ludicrous, also in sustainability terms… We would probably have to throw away a lot of the flowers that day.

So on the online shop we show the large version of a product initially. When the customer switches to the small, or medium, the image does not change. It only changes once a color variant has been set. That’s confusing!

imho the algorithm should detect any change and switch to the next possible match on EACH single variant selection, independently if any other variant is selected!

Searching the web I see that this is an open issue for years now. Fix it!

    Thank you!

  • Hi @alframe

    Thanks for reaching out!

If I understand you correctly, the images only switch when all variant options are chosen on your site, right?

This is the expected behavior of variable products. If you have 4 variations, you need to add images to these variations. Here’s a sample for your reference:

    By default, this is shown:

Selecting Blue > Large, switches the product image to its designated image:

Can you please confirm if all product variations contain their own images?

Meanwhile, to better picture your product variations here, can you please share with us a clear screenshot so that we could address you more effectively?

If you don’t already have a screenshot service installed, you can try https://snipboard.io. You can share the direct link to the image as a response to this topic.

You are saying, this is expected behavior.

I am saying it’s not good enough imo.

Off course, ideally, we should take pictures of every possible combination of articles. Nevertheless I think that the mechanism could be, that the system is looking for the first possible match and then displays that image. Because sometimes it is not viable to take images of all combinations.

I am not good at programming. But from what I understand, the current solution is waiting for all parameters to come in. I think it could actively look for possible solutions while the different choices are made by the customer.

For instance, if one has 3 sizes and 5 color variants, but only photographs the different sizes, the system could change to the image of the chosen size and ignore the color choice altogether.

    Thanks for considering!

Did you move it into the feature requests?

Because it’s not resolved… It’s (imo) a shortcoming of WooCommerce.

    Hello @alframe,

I apologize for any confusion caused. Perhaps we were not clear, but it is preferable for community members to submit feature requests.

However, I have gone ahead and created one for you here: https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/issues/37626.

Please note that enhancement requests are reviewed based on certain criteria, so it is unclear when the team will look into this. I recommend subscribing to the thread for future updates. 🙂

I have also found some resources on how to achieve this using JavaScript:

As nothing can be added here, I will keep the thread marked as solved. Please feel free to open a new thread if you have any other questions.

    Cheers!
