Support » Theme: Kale » Image Resolution in Kale

  • My site is being constructed now, but even after all the threads I’ve read there is no solution to the problem of image resolution quality. They’re dull, grainy and generally making me quite unhappy. Tried a plugin called EWWW to optimize the images, with very little improvement. PhotoShop and LR export specs have no effect, the problem has to be with the theme or WP itself. I’ve seen a solution where you install a plugin in a zip folder but it didn’t work, would not let me install and there were no instructions anywhere on exactly where to put it.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi @blgchf1,

Thanks for getting in touch, and thank you for using Kale- we really appreciate it.

I’d love to see an example of an image that is turning out grainy after upload if you have one available…I only see a couple of images on the site atm- the banner image and then one very small png file in the sidebar.

WordPress does compress your uploaded jpg images by default, but you can override the compression level if you’d like:

    Hope this helps!

If anyone would actually look at that link and tell me WHERE the code is supposed to go it would help. I tried it and it crashed my site, had to re-install the theme. The issue is with the Header images.

Sorry to hear that! You can either add it to your functions.php (in your child theme, ideally) or place it in a site-specific plugin.

Alternatively, it may be simpler to use a code snippets plugin like this one if you’re not comfortable making edits to files (or if you’re having some trouble making the edit without breaking the theme):

Does not work. Images look cloudy, matted, low-res and generally horrible. And FYI I’m using a color-managed 4K OLED screen. Seems to be a pervasive problem with WP in general. I regret using this platform.

True…overriding the compression level doesn’t affect your image resolution and also likely won’t fix cloudy or matted (or generally horrible) images.

It’s probably fortunate though that you’re coming to this conclusion at this point rather than after your site was up and running. It sounds like images are pretty crucial to your success, and if WP isn’t working out for you, it may be worth experimenting a bit with other platforms to see if the image processing ends up more aligned with what you’re looking for.

Thanks again, and best of luck!
