Maybe this will help someone who is also confused by this.

Before 3.9: Sometimes I already had an image in a Post, but I decided to add a link later. To do this, I clicked on the image in the editor, and click the link icon in the toolbar to choose a Post or Page to link to.

Moving on to 3.9. Now I can still click the toolbar icon to add a link. But now when you do that and save it, the toolbar doesn’t really look like you have a link there. You can also still click “unlink” to unlink it, but again, no CSS feedback – it’s not clear at all if there’s a link or not. Very weird, because I can click on align buttons in the toolbar and they do show as selected (good CSS!). Probably just lazy TinyMCE testing there, I’d guess?

I guess the new hipster linky button on the image itself is slightly streamlined, but overall, not an impressive update.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    Esmi,
I already know all the stock fixes, I’m a web developer. That’s really just an FYI – I don’t like the way it works now, although it is working. This part of it is a downgrade, not an upgrade.

I gather you’re very busy, and didn’t get the full point of my message. It’s not likely you’ll have a fix for that, I’m simply reporting how I dealt with the awkward new changes to help those of us who will be scratching our heads.

    Thanks anyway.

Do you mean that the link button doesn’t “highlight” when the current cursor is inside a link?

I don’t recall, but I don’t think it has ever done that, exactly.

    Sam,
Yes, that’s exactly it. In 3.8, if you put your cursor on an existing link in the editor, you will see the link highlighted on the editor toolbar. I can see why you’d overlook that, because if you highlight a word, and then click the link button, and add one, your link will be created, but the link icon is not highlighted because the focus has gone off the link and is elsewhere in the editor window. Put your cursor back on the link, and you will see the highlight.

You DO get a little highlight on 3.9 – a slight CSS color change, but not a border around the icon as in 3.8. A usability downgrade, that’s all, not a show-stopper.

Maybe I’m the only person who cares about this. 🙂 It probably got overlooked in the testing amongst all the other zillion issues.
