Image Icon – How many versions does WP create upon upload?

  • We have been given the ability to upload an “icon” to a post or page which is great. I see in the uploads directory up to 9 smaller versions are also created when you upload the original.

Can someone tell me how it knows to create these other versions, and how it defines which smaller sizes to create? Will the sizes all be consistent if I upload source images which all have the exact same resolution to begin with?

  • It depends upon the theme you are using.

The three main sizes are in Settings > Media (you can change them if you like).

Your theme may use custom sizes, which will most likely be defined in the functions.php file.

The different sizes are used in different areas of your site: thumbnails, featured images, sidebars.
