    Hi 🙂

This seems to be a common issue and I’ve read and re-read the posts on the forums, trying out the different suggestions but I can’t seem to get this fixed… 🙁
(and yes, I did do a search and found quite a few people with the very same problem, followed all the suggestions but still not finding a solution….)

really hoping someone will be able to point me in the right direction…. been going round in circles with this one forever and am not getting anywhere… :'(

The problem is with a WordPress multisite set up which I use for my clients, to show and discuss design mockups and iterations…
This setup works beautifully – I set up a new site for each client, with a custom login – and all works well — apart from one issue: broken image links….

    Here’s what I get:
all media files upload just fine, actual file path to uploaded file:
    mysite.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2011/07/image.jpg
If I manually type in this URL – the image appears fine within the WP admin, as well as the public site.

If I leave WP to take care of inserting the image into the post/page – the file path reads this instead (and entirely fails to show the image):
    mysite.com/clientpreview-sitename/files/2011/07/image.jpg

quick sum up of what I’ve done to try and get this solved:

    • edited the .htaccess file as required (via Network Admin settings), doublechecked via codex
    • edited the .htaccess file as suggested by various people on wordpress.org forums ~ results were either broken links, or no change at all (tested on previously uploaded images – as well as newly uploaded ones)
    • edited and added additional details to the Network Admin Settings, for Upload Path and Upload URL Path ~ no change….

Here is a test setup I used for checking various different settings – showing one past with the image inserted twice, once via WP admin, once via manual typing of file path:
    preview.eyedea.eu/client/test

I’m really hoping someone can help me along ~ any thoughts would be greatly appreciated 🙂
    Thanks 😉

If the mysite.com/clientpreview-sitename/files/2011/07/image.jpg style URL isn’t working, then your server isn’t reading the httpd.conf file correctly.

Check that AllowOverride is set to ALL.

Thanks so much for getting back to me, Ipstenu 😉 much appreciated 🙂

and sorry if this is basic question…. but where do I check that the AllowOverride is set to ALL?

Just had a look at my server and the domain/hosting settings and I can’t seem to find anything relating… ? Is this a server settings I need to check, or will this need to be included in the .htaccess file?

You look at the httpd.conf file.

If you don’t know where that is or how to safely edit it, call your host.

    Thanks 😉

will get in touch with my server guys 🙂

unless you are on a VPS or dedicated box, then you will not have access to the file.

    Thanks, Andrea 😉

I am on a VPS – though I am not an expert in server admin by a long shot… luckily the tech support guys are brilliant and always help me when I reach my limits… 🙂

So hopefully they can help me get this all done and fixed 🙂 Will report back and mark this post as resolved as soon as I get there 😉

just to report back…. ~ after all this ~ it proved to be a blank line at the end of my wp-config.php file which caused all the trouble….

Thanks to the lovely tech support ~ this issue is now resolved 😉
I was sure I had checked that…. at some point…. must have been doing some silly overwrites while going round in circles… :-\

Thanks for your comments anyway 🙂 Ipstenu and Andrea 🙂
